Area Description: Since 1980, populations of staghorn and Elkhorn corals have collapsed throughout the Caribbean from disease outbreaks with losses compounded locally by hurricanes, increased predation, bleaching, algae overgrowth and other factors. Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) Bonaire Project aims to restore the shallow water population of Elkhorn and Staghorn corals along the coastline of Bonaire and Klein Bonaire. After growing in offshore nurseries for few months, coral colonies are out planted onto degraded portion of the reef, called "restoration sites".
